Nichole W, a mother to a nine-year-old boy, had a fairly smooth-sailing first pregnancy back in 2011. When she turned 30, Nichole W and her partner both felt that they wanted to have another child. Complications and difficulties
As a quadriplegic, Nichole W knew that pregnancy for women with paralysis remains uncommon and complicated. The decision to start on the journey of trying to conceive would also come with risks, including dangerous blood clots and high blood pressure.
After months of trying, a visit to a fertility doctor, and dozens of negative tests, the couple finally got pregnant. However, this happiness was short-lived because Nichole W experienced a chemical pregnancy—a very early miscarriage that occurs when an egg is fertilized but doesn't fully implant in the uterus—shortly after.
Inaccessibility of other fertility products
Nichole W had heard of fertility kits and ovulation test strips that might have been useful for her trying to conceive journey. However, these kits and strips were inaccessible for quadriplegics—they were difficult to use for people who had difficulties manoeuvring their fingers and joints.
