"At 30 years old, I had already been trying to conceive for 3 years when I discovered Mira and it changed everything. This is my story of how hormone testing helped me handle some of my unique health challenges and got me to a Big Fat Positive!
When you’ve been trying for what feels like forever, it can be really disheartening to get a negative pregnancy test result every month. That’s what life was like for me though and it was starting to take its toll. I knew that I might have some issues with trying to conceive, but this was putting my patience to the test. Getting that big fat negative is like a monthly reminder that you haven’t achieved what you set out to achieve and I started looking for answers.
My fertility challenges were not unexpected. I was diagnosed with PCOS, a hormonal imbalance that is the leading cause of infertility in women, and knew that getting pregnant with this condition might be a struggle. With PCOS you can have a whole host of issues related to your metabolism and reproductive health. Everything from irregular periods to a chronic lack of ovulation are commonplace and as you can imagine, make navigating TTC a little more difficult.
PCOS wasn’t my only challenge though. As a first responder, I suffered an injury that left me with debilitating pain. The solution was to have a spinal cord stimulator installed to deal with the pain. A spinal cord stimulator is a small electrode/battery device implanted near the spine that allows you to use a remote control to send electrical impulses when you feel pain. The impact of this device on fertility isn’t well known or studied, but I knew it might be a challenge on my journey to parenthood.
After trying for so long, I started to look into what I could do to help the situation along. If there was something I could do to make getting pregnant easier, I was going to do it. In my research I discovered the Mira fertility device and was immediately intrigued by the ability to test my hormones. Not only would I be able to gain some valuable insights on my reproductive health, but I also knew I would finally be able to pinpoint ovulation. And since ovulation is the gateway to getting pregnant, it was a no brainer for me.
Hormonal imbalances with PCOS can make ovulation difficult to track because your sex hormones may not follow predictable patterns to trigger ovulation. With PCOS you may have several peaks, making ovulation prediction that much less accurate. This is just one of the many challenges you can face with a hormonal disorder when you’re trying to get pregnant. Given the hormonal variations that can happen with PCOS, I wanted the most accurate and reliable way to predict my ovulation - enter Mira."
Testing with Mira
"Before using Mira, ovulation tracking was hard work for me. I never knew when it was coming and I always felt like I was juggling so many different methods, indications, etc. I needed something simple and accurate that would work with PCOS.
The app and the monitor combined were so simple and easy to use. I was immediately impressed and I hadn’t even started testing yet. Interestingly enough, I was getting violently ill every month and could never figure out why. With the Mira testing wands I was able to pinpoint that my monthly “illness” was actually part of ovulation. The accuracy of the LH and Estrogen wands helped me pinpoint the peak that would coincide with my illness. Not only had I solved the mystery of getting violently ill every month, but I had accurate data on when I was in my fertile window. This meant I could time intercourse to give us the best chance of success."
Advice for others
"Don’t give up! You know your body best and taking the time to learn your unique patterns can be one of the best things you can do on your journey. Even with PCOS and a spinal cord injury, I kept pushing and researching so that I could figure it out. I wasn’t going to give up on my dream and hormone testing helped me make it a reality.
The device itself is easy to use and the app makes for an uncomplicated look at your hormonal health. You can even share this information with your doctor or healthcare team and use the data to advocate for yourself. While I was testing, my only wish was for a way to measure my progesterone but this product has since been introduced by Mira.
Don’t let PCOS spell the end of your pregnancy hopes. Tracking ovulation may be difficult, but it’s not impossible. A device like Mira can help you finally tame the beast that is PCOS and help you understand your own personalized hormone data so you can have a complete picture of your fertility."
