Although I’d always been fascinated with the human body, it wasn’t until I watched my best friend struggle with infertility that I dove deep into this world.  As I supported my friend through her struggles, I learned more and more about what really goes on with reproductive health and the challenges people can face.  The education you receive in school about this stuff is cursory at best and downright inaccurate at worst, so I was on a quest for deeper knowledge and real world advice.  Being a research geek at heart, I jumped straight into learning all I could to understand her journey.  The deeper I dove into the research, stories, and experiences of others the more fascinated I became.

After many rounds of treatments, my friend eventually had twins just months before I had my own child.  A couple of years later another friend asked me to be a surrogate and I jumped at the chance.  I’m not sure I would have been as eager to help if I hadn’t seen first hand the hardship my friend endured trying to get pregnant and her quest for information.  My fascination to learn more about all things fertility only grew as I started to undergo some of the treatments first hand.  That experience gave me a unique perspective and insight that I could not have gained otherwise and a compassion for what potential parents face.

A big part of what I do as a writer is breaking down complex information in a way that is easily understandable to the reader.  I’ve written about many different subjects, from birding to construction and a lot in between, but none has been as fulfilling as writing about women’s health and fertility.  I get to apply my real world knowledge and experiences doing what I love, while educating others about the ins and outs of women’s health and fertility.

It’s very rewarding to partner with Mira and help empower women and people who menstruate to understand their bodies better.
