Episode 7: "I Was My Own Guinea Pig" — Alisa Vitti on Creating Cycle Syncing® When No One Was Listening

Written by Vasiliki Anastasopoulou

"I was my first guinea pig, that's for sure." — Alisa Vitti

From age 12 to 22, Alisa Vitti menstruated fewer than five times. She was obese, covered in cystic acne, and unable to sleep through the night. Doctors told her it was normal. Then they told her it was incurable. Then they handed her a birth control prescription and sent her home.

She said no and went to the library instead.

In this episode of Mirror Talks, Alisa, a functional nutritionist, hormone expert, and founder of Flo Living, shares how she diagnosed herself with PCOS before the internet existed. She designed her own recovery protocol from scratch and built a global method that has since been backed by clinical research.

✨ When medicine has no answer

At 22, Alisa marched into her gynecologist's office with a medical journal, a self-diagnosis, and a plan. The doctor confirmed she was right, then handed her a birth control prescription. The pill suppresses ovulation. In a patient who already wasn't ovulating, that made no sense to Alisa, and she said so.

What followed was years of self-experimentation: naturopaths, candida diets, detox protocols. One left her visibly orange from too much carrot juice. None of them worked. What eventually did was more fundamental, learning to support the endocrine system rather than just treat its symptoms. Within months, her cycle returned. The weight, acne, and insomnia resolved.

🩵 Cycle Syncing® — the method, the science, the study

Alisa's recovery protocol became her clinical practice and eventually her first book, WomanCode, in 2013, which is one of the longest best-selling women's health books. The bigger discovery came later: the infradian rhythm, the 28-day biological clock governing women's cycles, metabolism, and immune response from puberty to menopause. Most women don't know it exists. Not knowing it, Alisa argues, means constantly disrupting it.

To support it, she created the Cycle Syncing® method and published it in her book In the FLO, which was named a Best New Health & Wellness Book to Read in 2020 by CNET. It went viral with over 120 million TikTok posts and counting.

In 2025, she completed the first IRB-approved clinical trial on the method, co-conducted with Mira. Results released in early 2026: an 86% reduction in PMS symptoms for 92% of participants, within three months, even when users only followed the method with just 72% compliance. You don't have to do it perfectly. You just have to do it.

💚 What gets lost in translation

The most common misreading Alisa sees online: that cycle syncing means avoiding strength training in certain phases. It doesn't. What changes phase to phase are cardio intensity and duration. After ovulation, metabolism speeds up, cortisol rises slightly, and long, high-intensity sessions become harder on the body. The fix isn't to stop moving. It's to modulate.

The method was never meant to be a rigid food list or a perfect protocol. At 48, still ovulating and symptom-free after nearly 30 years of living it, Alisa is her own best evidence that playing the long game, gently and consistently, is the whole point.
